What a website costs in South Africa

There are two ways to pay: a bigger amount once to a web designer, or a smaller amount every month to a website builder. Here's what each one includes, so you can compare them fairly.

Paying a web designer

ProCompare's guide gives 2025 prices of about R5,000 to R20,000 once-off for a simple website of 3 to 5 pages, and R20,000 to R60,000 for a bigger website for an established business. These are once-off prices, so ask what hosting and later changes will cost.

You get a website made just for your business, and a good designer can also give advice. This suits a business that needs something complicated. Before you agree, ask who will change your prices later, what each change will cost, and who pays for hosting.

Paying a website builder

You pay a monthly fee, and hosting and the secure padlock are usually part of it. You make the website yourself and can change it whenever you like. The downside is that you work within a ready-made design, and you keep paying for as long as you want the site online.

The costs people forget

  • Your web address, renewed every year
  • Hosting, the place your site lives
  • The padlock that marks a site as secure
  • Changes after the site is finished
  • Photos and the words on the page

Which one is right for you?

If you need an online shop or something built specially, talk to a web designer. If you need customers to find you, see what you do and contact you, a website builder can do that for less.

Questions about website costs

How much does a small business website cost in South Africa?

ProCompare's 2025 guide puts a simple website made by a designer at about R5,000 to R20,000 once-off. A website builder costs a monthly fee instead. Kwickly starts at R99 a month.

Do I need to pay for hosting separately?

With a web designer, usually yes. On Kwickly, hosting and the secure padlock are part of the monthly price.

Is a free website good enough for a business?

It can be a start, but check the limits first. Free plans often show the builder's adverts or don't let you use your own address.

What happens if I stop paying?

Your site stays online until the end of the time you paid for. An invoice still unpaid 14 days after its due date pauses the site. A designer-built site is yours to keep, but you still pay someone to host it.
